The 12AU7 and its variants are miniature nine-pin medium-gain dual-triode vacuum tubes, also known as ECC82 in Europe. They are used in audio amplifiers, TV receivers, and pre-semiconductor digital computers.

ECC82 is a pin compatible audio and general purpose triode valve with two independent halves. It was used in television receivers as timebase multi-vibrators, AGC circuits and driver stages.
ECC82 is a double triode tube with base NOVAL and limiting values of max 22,2 Uf and If = 6,3/12,6 300/150 V. It has typical characteristics of Ua = Ug = Ia = S = Ri = μ = 250 and capacitances of system I. cg/k = 1,9 ca = 1,9 cg/a = 1,63.
The ECC82 is a dual triode vacuum tube with medium gain and low noise characteristics, making it ideal for hi-fi audio equipment and instrument amplification. It is commonly used as a low-noise line amplifier, driver, and phase inverter in push-pull amplifier circuits, and can replace an ECC81/12AX7 for lower gain applications. ...

Learn the difference between ECC82 and 12AU7 tubes, which are the same tube with different names. Find out how they are used in guitar preamps, headphone amps, hi-fi audio and more.
12AU7 will probably work fine in the phase inverter position (right before the power tubes),or reverb driver.... In most vintage amps with good quality plate resistors it will be OK in the other preamp stages, ...I would be a little careful with some modern PCB/budget amps with this though, 12AU7 draws significantly more current than a 12AX7 and migh possibly burn up a plate resistor.
An amplification factor of 17 is quoted, and the ECC82 is virtually a pair of EC90 triodes in a single envelope but not designed for RF use. We were surprised at the very low CV number, suggesting availability at the start of WWII even though the B9A base is post war in the UK.
